AMP Praises Life and Career of Senator Daniel Inouye

WASHINGTON, DC — American Maritime Partnership today praised the life and career of U.S. Senator Daniel Inouye (D-HI), who passed away yesterday at the age of 88.

“Senator Inouye will be remembered forever by a grateful maritime nation,” said James Henry, President of the Transportation Institute and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the American Maritime Partnership. “The U.S. Senate and all Americans have lost an honorable man and genuine statesman.”

Inouye was a World War II hero, losing his right arm during a battle in Europe. After serving briefly in the U.S. House of Representatives when Hawaii became a state in 1959, Inouye successfully ran for the U.S. Senate in 1963 and served his state and country in that position for 50 years. He was the second-longest serving U.S. Senator in the history of that institution.
