THIRD ANNUAL “SAIL-IN” UPDATES CONGRESS ON BENEFITS OF STRONG, UNIFIED U.S. MARITIME INDUSTRY: An estimated 155 American maritime industry representatives from throughout the country gathered in Washington, D.C. for the third-annual “Sail-In” on May 9. This eclectic group of maritime professionals gathered to update Congress a day after the release of a new study from the Navy League of the United States that says a unified domestic maritime industry plays a “unique and extraordinary” role in promoting U.S. economic, national and homeland security. LAKES WELCOME NEWEST U.S.-FLAG VESSEL: The Lakes Jones Act fleet welcomed its newest member on May 5. The KEN BOOTHE SR./LAKES CONTENDER, an 845-foot-long tug/barge unit, left Erie, Pa., and sailed to Silver Bay, Minn., where she loaded more than 36,000 tons of iron ore for delivery to the steel mill in Cleveland, Ohio. That one cargo represents more than four days production at a mine on Minnesota’s famed Mesabi Range and will make enough steel to build more than 30,000 cars.
