Job Description
A Mate assigned to work on a dredge acts as a working Foreman and oversees the activities of the Deckhands engaged in various activities.
Essential Job Functions
Handling of equipment and vessels engaged in various stages of the setting up and breaking down of pipelines and anchors
Repairing, servicing and utilization of hydraulic dredging equipment, or other hoist machines used to lift material
Engage in the maintenance and repair of cable; the removal and replacement of teeth on the cutterhead
Cleaning and maintenance of the pumps and impellers
Utilizing various hand and power tools when drilling, cutting, or torching various materials in the course of fabricating work pieces.
Abide by company and worksite safety policies to achieve a “Safety First” workplace
He/she becomes the extra pair of hands in most activities and assumes responsibility for the direction and control of each task that he/she is supervising. He/she will participate in training and safety meetings. May lift, carry, pull or push miscellaneous equipment and supplies weighing up to 75 lbs.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervises Boatmen, and Deckhands on production‐based tasks including adding/removing discharge line, shifting anchors, and dredge maintenance. The Mate assumes responsibility for the direction and control of each task that he/she is supervising.
Requirements
Ability to work 84‐hour work week
Ability to live aboard vessel for full rotation
Ability to understand hand signals and verbal commands in English
Additional duties, activities, functions and responsibilities of the position may be required as necessary.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to lift or carry miscellaneous equipment, supplies and parts up to 50 lbs. unassisted.
Must be able to tolerate rough seas, normal weather conditions, some climbing, vibrations, heat, confined spaces, stand for long periods of time, and high noise levels
Work will frequently require individuals to push, pull, bend or stand for long periods of time, and climb stairs & ladders
