General Statement of Duties:
· The Chief Engineer is responsible for the overall maintenance and management of shipboard engineering systems and equipment. Other duties include offering guidance on the vessel’s structural maintenance and repair, ensuring cleanliness of the ship’s Engine Room, and coordinating with outside contractors for the installation and repair of shipboard systems. Along with the Master, the Chief Engineer also serves as a key point of contact with the Maritime Administration to complete projects aboard Patriot State II, a federally-funded vessel.
· As supervisor of the Engineering Division, the Chief Engineer will oversee the day to day activities and coordinate work of the engineering crew. Additionally, the Chief Engineer will establish watch schedules and ensure the Engineering space is properly crewed by a licensed engineer.
· Additionally, the Chief Engineer must ensure that the vessel’s engineering records are properly and accurately maintained, and provides for the safe keeping of all instruction books, ship’s drawings and records and to ensure that they are available for examination by all engineering staff and/or visiting technicians.
· While the Chief Engineer position is not specifically designated in a training role, like all aboard, the Chief Engineer plays a key role in supporting the cadet training and the unique mission of the Academy.
· All selected candidates must comply with Mass. Maritime Academy military customs, uniforms and ranks and participate in random drug screening.
· Participate in ship’s emergency response squad
· Participate in all Academy sponsored ship activations, to include sea term, annual underway period for cadet training, sail to and from shipyard, and participate in shipyard repairs
Required Qualifications:
· Hold a Bachelor’s Degree in recognized academic discipline.
· Hold USCG License as an unlimited Chief Engineer Motor
· Have strong knowledge of diesel propulsion and electrical generating systems, fuel centrifuges, air compressors, pumps, hydraulics, water makers, hotel systems, plumbing, refrigeration, heating, and air conditioning
· Possess strong time management skills: able to handle multiple tasks, set priorities and meet deadlines
· Exhibit excellent computer, oral and written communication skills.
· Possess Industry experience with diesel – electric propulsion.
· Have experience with computerized maintenance management systems.
· Understand the unique mission of the university as a maritime academy.
Preferred Qualifications:
· Experience working with diverse populations is highly valued.
· Chief Engineer – Steam and Gas Turbine (in addition to required Chief Motor)
Salary: $110,000 to $115,000. The Academy offers generous benefits policies and a competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. The Academy is not sponsoring immigration visas at this time. FLSA Status: Exempt
