The State of Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT) has a Ferry Captain position in the Bureau of Public Transportation, located at the Rocky Hill-Glastonbury Ferry. This position is 37.5 hours per week working either the AM shift or the PM shift. The ferries operate from 7:00 a.m. to 6:45 p.m. on weekdays and from 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on weekends.
Primary duties for the position include the command and operation of a Connecticut State Ferry on a daily shift during seasonal operations. Fundamental duties include: planning ferry crew workflow, managing schedules, oversight of work shift, upholding of ferry crew procedures, training of staff, operation of heavy duty marine engines and transmissions, oversight of loading and discharging of passengers/vehicles under mandated state and federal safety regulations, and oversight of toll collection.
The Ferry Master Captain also interacts with United States Coast Guard (USCG) officials on a regular basis to ensure compliance with relevant regulations and standards, prepares reports and correspondence including all documentation required for the USCG inspections, prepares and monitors maintenance and repair schedules for in-season and off-season operational activities, and daily maintenance of operating logs.
The Ferry Captain is required, at minimum, to have the following USCG license: Master of Self-Propelled Vessels Not Including Auxiliary Sail of Less Than 100 Gross Register Tons (GRT) Upon Inland Waters. This is a mandatory license as required by the USCG.
